I remember [my father] saying to me when I was quite young, ‘Learn the piano, you’ll always get invited to parties.’ That was the big thing about learning the piano. I think I did secretly think, ‘That’s a good idea.’ I’d had piano lessons when I was a little kid from the local old lady that a lot of kids [went] to. And she was very nice, and very patient. But the thing I hated was that she gave homework.
