About
In December 1966, two versions of the “Love In The Open Air / Theme From The Family Way” single were released in the UK, one by Decca credited to “The Tudor Minstrels”, the other one by EMI’s affiliate, United Artists, under the name “George Martin and his Orchestra”.
Due to the commercial failure of both singles, United Artists asked George Martin to record a more up-tempo arrangement of the main theme for the US market.
This upbeat version used the version of “Love In The Open Air” from the soundtrack album as its backing track. Additional drums, strings and brass were then overdubbed at EMI Studios, Abbey Road, in early February 1967, along with an unrelated George Martin composition, “Bahama Sound“, released as the B-side of the single. The re-recording didn’t help, as the US single was another commercial failure.
It’s worth noting that, on this release, the composing credits for “Love In The Open Air” are “P. McCartney – G. Martin”, while the credits only indicate “Paul McCartney” on the UK releases.
