About

From Abbey Road Studios:

MASTERING ENGINEER

As a self-confessed “vinyl junkie” Alex grew up collecting soul, hip hop, reggae and indie records before developing an interest in studio work. Alex joined the studios over a decade ago as a studio engineer having heard the sound of Abbey Road Studios via his parents’ record collection from the 1960s, and once in quickly worked his way up to the role of mastering engineer.

Alex has mastered albums and singles for some of the biggest acts in pop, rock and dance worldwide including The Beatles, My Bloody Valentine, The Pixies, Marvin Gaye, Mogwai, Maverick Sabre, Gilberto Gil, Slaves, Bring Me The Horizon, Isobel Campbell, Mark Lanegan, St. Germain and The Chemical Brothers. He is also in demand as a remastering engineer, with past projects including everything from ethnic and jazz to folk and classical as well as guitar based indie groups, pop releases and Film Soundtracks.

He is one of the few mastering engineers in the world in possession of a Neumann VMS 82 DMM Cutting Lathe. This Direct to Metal Mastering lathe cuts onto copper discs which retain an incredible high end, warmth and sound quality – It is currently the only operational model in the UK in service.

A vinyl enthusiast to this day, Alex has been responsible for cutting some of the biggest albums in pop and rock of recent years to 12” including Keane’s no.1 album ‘Strangelands’ , Radiohead’s ‘The King of Limbs’ (best-selling vinyl album of 2011), plus albums from Joanna Newsom, Animal Collective, Massive Attack and Coldplay.

Alex Wharton remastered the following:
