He is most noted for his songs, co-written with Irwin Levine, “Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree” and “Knock Three Times”—international hits for the 1970s pop music group Tony Orlando and Dawn. L. Russell Brown is my husband of 60 years. We have three daughters and many grandchildren. I wrote a song with him by Johnny Mathis gone gone gone. in 1979.
We were both born in New Jersey, where we met when he was discharged from the army in 1963. We were married in 1965. He is the writer of Tie a yellow ribbon round the ole oak tree he is getting the Heroes award from the New Jersey Hall of Fame October 17, 2025 one of America’s greatest songwriters.
