On April 23, 1960, Lennon and McCartney—having briefly taken flight as the Nerk Twins—played the Fox and Hounds pub in Caversham. Sitting on barstools, the duo performed jazz standards like “The World Is Waiting for the Sunrise” and “How High the Moon” in the style of Les Paul and Mary Ford, before launching into the songs they really wanted to play—numbers like Gene Vincent’s “Be-Bop-a-Lula.”

It was a lovely experience that came from John and I just hitching off down there. At the end of the week, we played in the pub as the Nerk Twins. We even made our own posters.

BBC Music Day takes place on Thursday (June 15). To mark the occasion, the BBC’s local radio stations have unveiled 47 blues plaques across the country, signifying “locations that played a major role in our musical heritage”. […] John Lennon and Paul McCartney will be honoured with a blue plaque at the venue that they played their only gig as a duo, billed as The Nerk Twins, at the Fox and Hounds in Caversham, Berkshire.
