About

In a dressing room backstage, before the concert, Paul McCartney talked to reporter Fred Robbins, for an interview which would be published in VIVA magazine in January 1974.

Paul McCartney’s concert

Paul McCartney – currently making his first ‘live’ tour since splitting with the Beatles – brings his new band, Wings, to Leicester on July 9. They will be appearing on stage at the Leicester Odeon.

McCartney has had a long struggle to gain recognition in his solo career. The other Beatles, George Harrison, John Lennon and Ringo Starr all did well with their independent albums. But McCartney’s early efforts were slammed by the critics.

However, since joining forces with ex-Moody Blues singer, Denny Laine, and ace guitarist Henry McCullough to form Wings, the bass guitarist has gradually built up a firm following. Certainly his recent TV spectacular helped.

Mrs McCartney – former rock photographer Linda Eastman, who now sings and plays keyboard with her husband – has taken much of the knocking. But on the new album, ‘Red Rose Speedway’, she makes a worthwhile contribution and the band certainly seems a lot tighter than they did on the debut LP.

It will be interesting to see whether Wings can match on stage the excellence of their recorded sound. Knowing McCartney, I’m confident no-one will be disappointed.
