About

From the “New World Tour” tour book, remembering the 1989/90 tour:

Of all the gigs I’ve played that was the greatest because of the audience. I’ve never been in a concert like it. I could feel every single human being there was totally focused and it lifted all of our lives up. Hearing Paul sing those John songs, it was magic. I love it when people are there for the thrill, the experience, the memory, nothing cynical in their attitude at all.

Linda McCartney

It was the best moment of the tour for me. A homecoming which led to a
lot of nerves particularly for the band, which I hadn’t even thought of till we got there. But they were all thinking, This guy was in The Beatles. We’re not The Beatles. Where does that leave us?

Standing on the stage all day you could see this beautiful weather coming towards us, blue sky, a lovely sunset. Great balmy evening and a crowd of 50,000. We played pretty good and the high-spot was when we played the medley tribute to John, finishing off with Give Peace A Chance. We finished — and the crowd didn’t. They just kept the ‘All we are saying’ chant going. That brought a lump to the throat. They sang it over and over. It just came looming up to us from the back until we had to kick back into it — that was one of the greatest moments of my career. It’s moments like that that make you go, God, this is it! This is why I like it!

Paul McCartney

From Alistair Taylor:

I believe you had a reunion with Paul McCartney recently?

I went to the ‘Let it Be Liverpool’ concert, which was a bit sensational. To hear 25,000 people on the banks of the Mersey singing ‘Hey Jude’ and ‘Give Peace a Chance’ was an unbelievable memory.

I know Geoff Baker, Paul’s publicist, and he said I should come back and meet him. However, it was too late to organise passes and all the business and so I just went up to the gate and asked for Geoff Baker. The girl came back and said here are two tickets. I asked whether they would get me backstage and she said they were just for the concert. I told her that Geoff Baker was going to organise it for me to meet Paul. I had to explain who I was, and she went off again. There were other people trying to do the same and she came back and out these badges on us. I had a gold one and they got red ones. There were two marquees, one saying ‘press and VIPs and one for family. I just followed the others to the press tent and the girl said ‘No, Mr, Taylor, you go to the other one.’ By now time was running out and there was no sign of Paul but I saw Linda and followed her and there was Paul surrounded by a big circle of people with chains on, like Mayors. I stood at the back and I saw Paul’s eyes flick around, he’s always done that, and he suddenly say me and everybody stopped. I didn’t know what to expect and just walked forward and put out my hand and said ‘Hi fella’. He said ‘Come here’ and there were big hugs and commented on our grey hair, who had the most. It was nice. He said to one of his aides to get hold of my address, but I haven’t heard from him from that day. It is very sad. But it was nice while it lasted.

From National Museums Liverpool:

On 28 June 1990 Paul McCartney returned to his home city for a charity concert, appropriately named ‘Let It Be Liverpool’.

The enormous concert was held in the King’s Dock, on the waterfront adjacent to the Albert Dock. Since then the King’s Dock was the venue for Liverpool’s summer pops concerts for many years until 2004. A new purpose built stadium, the Echo Arena Liverpool, opened there in 2008.
