About

Following the soundcheck, Paul met his idol Carl Perkins backstage.

Memphis – The New World Tour arrives in the birthplace of Blair Theodore Cunningham, “our new drummer”. To celebrate this homecoming, Blair’s entire family arrive for the show in droves and the local boy is in much demand with Tennessee TV stations. Also at the show is rock and roll luminary Carl Perkins, who jams with Paul backstage before the concert. Together they guitar-duet through ‘Blue Suede Shoes’, ‘Maybellene’, ‘Matchbox’ and ‘My Old Friend’ – a song Carl wrote for Paul when they recorded together on Montserrat. After joining a crowd of 42,000 to watch the concert, Carl Perkins stops a reporter later and tells him, “Get your notebook out, son, and write this down: you can tell anyone in the world that Carl Perkins has just witnessed absolutely the greatest show he has ever seen in his life. That boy just blows my mind.”

Notes from Geoff Baker, Paul McCartney’s publicist – from Club Sandwich 66, Summer 1993
