Beatles back folk group!

TWO of the Beatles play in the backing of a record to be issued by Philips on August 27! The disc was jointly produced by John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

It features Brian Epstein’s folk group the Silkie singing a Lennon-McCartney composition, “You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away,” from the film “HELP!” The record will be issued on the Fontana label.

George Harrison played tambourine and Paul McCartney guitar on the session.

38 hours to make a No 1 [IT MUST BE A RECORD]

SOME records are made in minutes — and sound like it, too. Others take an hour or two.

One side that three of The Beatles produced for the folksie Silkie group before winging off to America took six hours… which would be in the marathon class, if it wasn’t for the Rolling Stones.

They tell me they spent thirty-eight hours in a Hollywood studio on the A-side of their new single “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” out here tomorrow on Decca. It plays for 3m. 40s. Stones Jagger and Richard wrote the song. The others learned it in the studio. Then they arranged it, rehearsed it and nursed it until it was ready for their hungry fans. Already 1,000,000 have devoured it in America, where it topped the charts.

Now it must do the same here. Advance orders reached a quarter-million yesterday.

JOHN LENNON was recording chief in the control box when the Silkie group, four Hull University ex-students, made their six-hour A-side — “You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away” (Fontana)… which is the Dylan-type song John sings in the film “Help!”

Paul McCartney plays guitar on the Silkie disc, George Harrison rapped his knuckles on a tambourine.

With all this help the Silkie could register their first hit.

NEW TO THE CHARTS – Beatles help Silkie

THE disc that John Lennon and Paul McCartney produced before they left on the Beatles’ tour of America — “You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away,” by the Silkie—makes it bow in the NME Chart this week at No. 29.

Few disc fans will need much of an introduction to the Silkie. This four-strong folk group is managed by Brian Epstein, and since he signed them up they have had a barrage of promotion and publicity. Fontana also released their first LP this month—”The Silkie Sing The Songs Of Bob Dylan.”

The group’s first single, “Blood Red River,” was a comparative failure. But with John and Paul to help, their natural talent has come to the fore and they now look set for big things!

The song is, of course, a Lennon and McCartney composition. It is on the Beatles’ “Help!” LP, although not in the film.
