Mary was, of course, the first one born to us, and we brought her back from the hospital and put her in the cot in our bedroom. She was asleep and we were just about to go off when I heard ‘hic, hic.’ ‘Oh no,’ I thought, ‘I’m not going to be able to make this.’ So for the next night we managed to get hold of a night nurse. We had Mary all day until eleven, then the nurse would feed Mary twice during the night. She did a really good job and by the time Mary was a few weeks old we didn’t hear a thing from eleven to nine the next morning, she woke up starving and we’d had ourselves a good night’s sleep.
