Sobhan Grogan: How did you feel when you found out that Charles Manson had written the title of the song “Helter Skelter” on the wall of the house of Sharon Tate, who he murdered?
Paul: I was a little scared. I felt, frankly, not too comfortable. It’s unpleasant when your song is used for such terrible purposes. It’s so strange! Because when we wrote it, we wanted it to be just loud and unbridled rock ‘n’ roll. That was all we were thinking about at that moment. The Beatles have never been the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (as much as the followers of the Manson cult would like to believe that). And in general, it’s impossible to control other people’s thoughts and feelings, so it’s pretty strange to see your song being used by followers of some crazy cult.
