Recording "Get On The Right Thing"

For Paul McCartney

Last updated on September 21, 2025

The “Ram” sessions had begun two days earlier, on October 12, 1970, with Paul McCartney, joined by studio musicians Denny Seiwell on drums and David Spinozza on guitar, recording “Another Day.”

Paul decided to cancel Tuesday’s session and on this second day, he chose to work on a different song, “Get On The Right Thing.” Although it would not be included on “Ram,” it would later appear on the second Wings album, “Red Rose Speedway,” released in 1973.

For the basic track, Paul played piano and sang a rough guide vocal, while Spinozza handled electric guitar and Seiwell played drums. Spinozza later added overdubbed guitar parts in selected sections of the track.

The session again ran from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., following what would become the regular “Ram” schedule. At the end of the day, Paul told Seiwell and Spinozza that there would be no session the following day. Spinozza began to grow frustrated with those breaks in the weekly schedule, as he was in high demand as a session musician and had to turn down other engagements.

They reconvened on Friday, October 16.

I just remember the vocal being so crazy. Get on the right thing! He was screaming and we were just jamming away. It was a great , fun track to perform. And again it stops and starts and little bits and pieces throughout the song that changes. It’s just a really interesting piece of music. It’s like a little symphony. Rock ‘n’ roll symphony.

Denny Seiwell – Interview with Edward Eikelenboom, August 2013 – From Maccazine Volume 40, Issue 3

We recorded the basic track with Paul on piano and Dave on electric guitar, and I covered the drums with tea towels trying to get The Beatles’ drum sound from so many recordings, trying to be Ringo! It was an awesome song that took a lot of technique to pull off, and quite complicated as well.

The date started out going really smoothly, but then what was happening was that although originally they had told me they wanted me for four whole weeks, days were getting cancelled out and they weren’t booking definite dates. So I had to keep asking, not to be a drag, but to keep my book straight and to know what other work I could take. I kept asking but I wasn’t getting a straight answer.

Maccazine - Volume 40, Issue 3 - RAM Part 1 - Timeline

This very special RAM special is the first in a series. This is a Timeline for 1970 – 1971 when McCartney started writing and planning RAM in the summer of 1970 and ending with the release of the first Wings album WILD LIFE in December 1971. [...] One thing I noted when exploring the material inside the deluxe RAM remaster is that the book contains many mistakes. A couple of dates are completely inaccurate and the story is far from complete. For this reason, I started to compile a Timeline for the 1970/1971 period filling the gaps and correcting the mistakes. The result is this Maccazine special. As the Timeline was way too long for one special, we decided to do a double issue (issue 3, 2012 and issue 1, 2013).
