About

The Beatles had so far spent six sessions recording Paul McCartney’s “Penny Lane”, on December 29 and December 30, 1966, and on January 4, January 5, January 6 and January 9, 1967. On this day, from 7 pm to 1:40 am, additional overdubs were added to Take 9. However, the session wasn’t very productive.

Paul, John Lennon and George Harrison added backing vocals to the instrumental section that would later feature a piccolo trumpet solo. Ringo Starr played tubular bells during Paul’s singing of “the fireman rushes in from the pouring rain…“, and Paul also played chimes. All these parts were added to track two of the four-track tape.

Work on “Penny Lane” would continue on January 12, 1967.
