On this Tuesday, Paul McCartney returned to the studio with drummer Denny Seiwell and guitarist David Spinozza. Spinozza had already been booked for another engagement from Wednesday to Friday, as Paul and Linda had been unable to confirm when they would need him in advance.
That morning, the three musicians began work on “The Back Seat of My Car.” After a few hours, however, Paul grew dissatisfied with the results and decided to shift the focus of the session to “When The Wind Is Blowing.”
The piece, originally titled “Rupert,” had first been recorded by Paul at home in late December 1969. It was never intended for inclusion on “Ram.” Instead, Paul envisaged it as part of the soundtrack for an animated film about Rupert the Bear, a project he hoped to pursue after recently acquiring the film rights to the character. For this session, Paul and Spinozza both played acoustic guitar, while Seiwell contributed on drums.
“When The Wind Is Blowing” remained unreleased until its inclusion on the “Wing Wild Life – Archive Collection” in 2018.
The following day’s session was cancelled. Paul had arranged to meet with his legal team to review the preparation and progress of plans to dissolve The Beatles’ partnership. He also needed to secure a replacement guitarist for the sessions ahead.
By this point, Paul was getting along particularly well with drummer Denny Seiwell and asked him for recommendations. Seiwell suggested guitarist Hugh McCracken, who, by fortunate coincidence, was available on Thursday and Friday and joined the sessions.
