An article published in The Daily Telegraph in June 1969 reported that Paul McCartney was looking to acquire a new property. At the time, he already owned a house on Cavendish Avenue in St John’s Wood, London, as well as High Park Farm, a modest farm in Scotland.
A letter signed by Linda McCartney and dated September 30, 1969 — although its authenticity remains uncertain — suggests that Paul and Linda were still searching for a new property at that point.
These plans, however, did not materialize. In the months following The Beatles’ break-up, Paul and Linda would instead retreat to their farm in Scotland, seeking isolation from the public eye.
In 1970, they expanded their holdings in the area by acquiring Low Park Farm and Low Ranachan Farm, both situated near High Park Farm.
ESTATE VIEWED BY BEATLE
Paul McCartney, of the Beatles, and his wife have inspected Emmetts Grange, the 4,615-acre Exmoor estate 16 miles from Barnstaple, which is for sale. Being sold by Mr. John Bradley, a York businessman, it is expected to make in excess of £200,000 if auctioned.
Mr. Bob Nancekivell, joint master of the Devon and Somerset Staghounds, said yesterday they hoped the new owner would be a “hunting person.” Handled by Strutt & Parker, of Berkeley Square, the property has a five-bedroomed manor house and eight farm workers’ cottages.

Letter to real estate agent
30th September, 1969
Dear Sir,
We would like you to help us look for a small farm in an unspoilable and secluded area within 70 miles of London. The farmhouse should have 4–5 bedrooms and should be simple and homely. The outbuildings should be minimal but should have provision for a few horses. The land should be anywhere from 50 to 500 acres. Ideally, we would like the land to be natural – hilly – have its own wildlife and trees and if possible, be surrounded by national trust land.
As you can see, we are looking for a home in “the heart of the country”. If you have anything that would meet or come near to our requirements, please contact
Mrs. P. McCartney – 7 Cavendish Avenue, London N.W.8
OR
Ring: Peter Brown – 01.734.8232
Yours sincerely,
Linda McCartney
MRS. P. McCARTNEY
