About

After their first three dates as a live band (on February 9, 10 and 11), Wings took a day off even if it was not exactly restful.

After their gig at Hull University, they had passed the night at the Hotel Pearson Park, in Hull. On the morning of February 12, there was an incident with the hotel manager.

We didn’t even have hotels. By the time we found them, they tended to be bedsits. Weird little places. Pearson Park in Hull, some weird old guy got very annoyed with us because one of the roadies was smoking something. It was just a bunch of nutters on the road. I wasn’t interested in putting it together professionally.

Paul McCartney – From Interview with Q Magazine, December 2007

I think at one of those places that we stayed, Paul had a little beef with the owner over something. And somehow or another, his elbow kind of hit the guy in the face. Don’t think he did it intentionally, but all of a sudden his oldest girl [Heather] is running around saying: ‘Everybody get up, pack up. We got to get out of here. The cops are coming’. And it was hilarious, but I really think that that’s where he got the term ‘band on the run’ from.

Denny Seiwell – From Billboard, December 26, 2018

Linda McCartney: We stayed in a third-rate hotel there. The manager was a real Hitchcock – thought we were the lowest.

Trevor Jones (roadie): The next morning, due to a misunderstanding, Paul took all the abuse he could, then gave him a quick elbow in the nose. We were thrown out, but that was the only trouble we ran into.

Paul McCartney: We pressed on to Scarborough, which had no university but we stayed at a good place near the seafront. We stayed in our rooms and talked and played the tapes of the past gigs.

Paul McCartney – From the “Wings Over Europe” tour book

They left Hull and went to Scarborough, where there was no university. In the afternoon, they checked in at the Prince Of Wales Hotel in Scarborough and would stay there till they left on the following morning.

Linda McCartney wrote the following notes in her diary summarizing this day:

In morning scuffle with hotel manager
“your mob most disgusting” Thump!
calls police – cooled out
“Dogs in rooms” – you let us.
“men in room” .. .. etc
got out quick and drove to …….
Scarborrough – stayed
Prince of Wales Hotel.
No university in Scarborrough
Ireland win Rugby in last minute of game
