P. S. I Love You
Studio version
Love Me Do was released as a single in the United States on April 27, 1964 by Tollie Records (catalogue number Tollie 9001), a subsidiary of Vee-Jay. The song had been The Beatles’ debut single in the United Kingdom in October 1962 but had not previously been issued as a single in America. The B-side was ‘P.S. I Love You’. With Beatlemania at its peak in the US following the group’s February television appearances, the single reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on May 30, 1964 — making it The Beatles’ third US chart-topper in a matter of months.
The achievement was notable for another reason: the single was more than eighteen months old by the time it topped the American chart, demonstrating the enormous appetite for The Beatles’ material that had developed in the wake of their February 1964 US visit. Along with ‘Please Please Me‘ (Vee-Jay) and ‘She Loves You‘ (Swan), ‘Love Me Do’ was one of three older Beatles singles that became US hits after the Capitol releases had broken the group in America.
