  1. My Prayer

The song is a ballad which Paul and I wrote for our film but we found we just couldn’t sing it. We made a hash of it. So we thought we’d give it to somebody who could sing it well and decided on Proby.

TWO PROBY SINGLES — ONE BY BEATLES

P.J. PROBY’S next record covers an American hit “Hold On To What You’ve Got”—but he has also recorded a new Lennon-McCartney composition for his mid-summer single. The second Proby album has now been completed.

The U.S. version of “Hold On To What You’ve Got” by Joe Tex has already been issued here but without attaining chart success. Proby’s cover will be released on May 7.

The new Beatles song he has waxed is called “That Means A Lot” and it is likely to be Proby’s sixth British single—for release in July.

John told the NME on Tuesday: “The song is a ballad which Paul and I wrote for our film but we found we just couldn’t sing it. We made a hash of it. So we thought we’d give it to somebody who could sing it well and decided on Proby.

The new Proby album will be issued on the Liberty label in June. The tracks include “My Prayer,” “The Nearness Of You,” “Lonely Teardrops,” “With These Hands,” “Lonely Weekend” and “Secret Love.”

Latest ballroom bookings for Proby are Hastings Pier (May 8), Bedford Corn Exchange (18th) and Corby Civic Centre (21st). Proby is returning from Denmark this weekend to appear at Dunstable California on Saturday (17th).

P.J. TO CUT A BEATLES SONG

BEATLE songsmiths John Lennon and Paul McCartney have penned a number for controversial pop star P. J. Proby — and it will probably be the topside of his next single but one!

This exciting news was revealed to DISC WEEKLY on Monday, shortly after P.J. flew to Denmark for a concert appearance tomorrow (Thursday). The song has been completed by John and Paul, but has not yet been recorded.

Proby’s A & R man, Ron Richards, told DISC WEEKLY “The song won’t be P.J.’s next single release, but it definitely won’t be just an LP track either. No exact plans will be made until it has been recorded.

It is anticipated that P.J.’s next single will be issued about April 30, but no details on it are yet available.

P.J. returns from Denmark on Friday, and will start a five-day tour of Scotland in Glasgow on April 20.

Date for Proby’s new Beatle song

P. J. PROBY’S next single is the John Lennon—Paul McCartney composition, “That Means A Lot”, which was to have been issued before “Let The Water Run Down”.

It will now be released by Liberty on September 17. The flipside is a revival of “My Prayer”, taken from Proby’s latest LP.

Singles by Sandie Shaw, the Barron Knights and Four Pennies and LPs by Manfred Mann, the Silkie and Tony Hatch Orchestra are also scheduled.

Sandie Shaw’s will be issued next Friday (10th) but no titles are set. Before she left for Australia, Sandie had to postpone a recording session because of laryngitis. She was due to return to London yesterday (Thursday) and was expected to wax the single this weekend for Pye.

The Barron Knights have recorded “It Was A Very Good Year” (Columbia), which is issued on September 17. Another version by newcomer Richard McCord is released today on Pye.

The Pennies’ new disc, set for September 24 release, is “Until It’s Time For You To Go”, written by American folk singer Buffy St. Marie. The composer’s own version of this song was issued by Fontana some weeks ago.

The Manfreds’ LP, “Mann Made,” out on October 1, includes compositions from all the group except himself. Drummer Mick Hugg penned “Bare-Hug”; Mike Vickers wrote “You’re For Me”; Paul Jones, “I Really Do Believe”, and Tom McGuinness, “LSD”.

The Silkie has recorded an album of Bob Dylan compositions for release this weekend. It includes “Mr. Tambourine Man”, “It Ain’t Me Babe” and “Blowin’ In The Wind”.

“The Tony Hatch Sound”—an LP of his own compositions—is issued on Pye next Friday. It includes “Downtown”, “Where Are You Now” and “Sugar And Spice”.
