What I love about that story of Paul in the decade after the Beatles is he’s just a guy trying to figure out his life after you’ve been a Beatle since you were 17 . How do you be a person after that? Who are you? That whole story, I find it very humanizing.

I always felt, particularly the documentary, there’s been very little about it . I interviewed every member of Wings who’s alive, including Denny Laine, who passed away, and some of them had never done an interview before for something. So, it did feel like fresh ground to talk about… Which is great about one of the most famous people on the planet, that there’s an incredibly important chapter there that people don’t really know.

A lot of it was documented, but actually, Linda was a photographer . Linda took so many photos, and they had movie cameras constantly, so there were tons of home movies . So, it’s not like the Beatles, but there’s a fair amount of material, and a lot of material that’s never been seen, which is amazing.

It’s the thing I’m always calibrating. How much is this for fans, and how much is it for somebody who maybe doesn’t know anything about Paul in a way or know anything about this chapter of Paul’s life? It’s gotta do both . The fan part of me is like ‘Oh, can I just look at every stitch of everything?’ But I feel like when you shape a story, this happens in every film — there’s interesting stuff, but it just doesn’t fit the story. It’s not like I’m just there to catalog everything that happened in those years — that’s what Wikipedia is for.

It’s like, ‘What’s the story I’m trying to tell? Paul is a character in the story . What’s his journey and what are the scenes that tell that story?’ And so, in a way, the stuff that doesn’t fit makes itself apparent. Some of my favorite Wings songs or McCartney songs from the ‘70s — I mean, I got most of my favorite ones in there, but there are a couple of my favorites where I’m like, ‘It’s not even in there!’ [Laughs] It just doesn’t fit.

I attended a screening of MAN ON THE RUN last night at Loyola University in New Orleans. Scott Rodger, Paul’s long-time manager and part-time New Orleans resident, was in attendance and did a brief Q&A after the film.

They gave time for 3 audience questions picked at random at the end and dozens of hands were up in the air (mine included). Scott Rodger [Paul McCartney’s manager] and the moderator talked about 20 minutes before that, just about how the documentary came to be. Some random things I recall from their discussion: They started on it 4 years ago. Scott urged Paul to do it out of the blue, and connected him with Morgan Neville, which is when Paul started getting excited about telling his post-Beatles story. The Wings book was largely a result of the research and interviews collected for Man on the Run. The Wings book is the “expanded version” of the documentary. It was Paul’s idea not to do any talking heads. “This is a young man’s story, we don’t need old faces in it” (paraphrased) was what Scott said quoting Paul about it. The original cut was 4 hours. They didn’t want to make a series, they wanted to make a streamlined and award-worthy feature film, he said.

Scott (the original drummer for Dead Can Dance and a veteran of 4AD) began working with Paul 20 years ago, after Paul cold called Rodgers office. Rodger was managing Arcade Fire, Bjork and MIA at the time.

Paul apparently still looks at and approves all his tour merch. Scott said he noticed someone in the audience with a certain tour shirt that Paul had been on the fence about and thought might not be popular, and Scott took a picture of the guy wearing it, and sent it to Paul during the screening and Paul responded with a laughing emoji LOL.

He said Paul never ever stops (something Mike McCartney says in the film too). Always full of energy and thinking about projects and things to make. He said Paul is hard to keep up with in terms of energy, and it was his interpretation that this factor played into some of the Wings members leaving, and it has made Scott a better creative and better music manager from their time together. “I’ve really had to step up my game working with Paul.”

Any news on when this is due to come out?

The PaulMcCartney Project • Feb 05, 2025 • 1 year ago

Hi C. Feeney, no recent news. But when announcing the 50th anniversary re-release of Venus And Mars, the press release mentioned "More exciting celebratory Wings activity and announcements are soon set to follow," which could be a hint to the release of "Man On The Run."
