I’d run into Youth, cos he did a mix for me. Then we were just sort of saying, “Oh, it’d be great to get in the studio and just totally goof around and not have to be too serious.” I said, “Tell you what, why don’t you come down to my studio and we’ll just see what happens?” The first one was a sort of psychedelic trance instrumental, which was great fun to do. He’d just say, “How about drums on this?” And I’d go, “OK” and I’d run out, play a bit of drums and then he’d edit it down. So it worked very well. It meant that I could just not really think too hard about it and just enjoy playing.
I suppose you’re not thinking about commercial pressures when you’re doing something like that?
No, we didn’t think about the commercial pressures. But I must say, I wasn’t too excited to hear it had sold 500 copies [laughs].
