Great album! I hated that album when I heard it for the very first time on my old noisy Capitol LP. The vinyl was so noisy I couldn’t hear some of those songs. I just thought, “Boy this isn’t very good.” However, the master tape sounds great. I helped them a little bit by running them through a layer of vacuum tubes. It gave Paul’s voice a little more life. That’s an album that really grew on me as I was working on it. On that song, “Every Night”, there’s that low bass note… I love that stuff. That’s the sound of the early solid-state Abbey Road studio, right after The Beatles’ Abbey Road LP. Everything’s in its own little area, but it sounds like EMI. I really like that sound.

From VintageRock.com:

For those living outside the Milky Way, Steve Hoffman is THE guy at DCC Compact Classics responsible for bringing that big analog sound and all its warmth to those little gold discs we so look forward to playing.

I heard a Buddy Holly compilation of his more than a decade ago, I remember it like yesterday, and have wanted to shake his hand ever since. This was the day I finally did it.

Wait: Steve, you’re about as close as anyone has ever come to being a consistent favorite of the 910, mostly through your work on the solo Beatles catalog. What was it like to take on the responsibility of remastering a classic album like McCartney?

Hoffman: A pain in the butt! But when I finally heard “Every Night” the way I wanted to hear it (applies thick Lawrence Welk-type accent) make-a-my-life-rich-and-re-war-ding!

Wait: Do I understand correctly that you had the same model two-track machine that they originally used to mix and master the album?

Hoffman: Yes.

Wait: A Studer?

Hoffman: Yeah, it’s a Studer.

Wait: Any good stories about other solo Beatle albums?

Hoffman: No, not really. The thing about EMI is they’re very zealous about secrets. Sometimes they don’t furnish original tape boxes, just the original tapes, because there’s little notes scribbled on them. But nothing really interesting, I’m sorry to say.

Wait: Say you’re doing a McCartney title — what’s the process you go through?

Hoffman: I’ll retrieve the original English Apple version, original American, and second and third American pressings. The German version. I listen to the 8-track, cassette, their CD, the Columbia CD — everything to hear what the vision was originally. I’ve heard every song a million times. I know everything about the album. I’ve done my homework. […]
