“O Father, You Have Given…” is the second track of the fourth movement – entitled “Father” – of Paul McCartney’s Liverpool Oratorio, released in 1991.
IV: FATHER. 1959. As mourners arrive for the funeral, Shanty thinks on his confusion, fears and upset at the death of his father. He reflects and worries about the relationship they had, distressed at his father’s mortality. Finally he realises fathers are only human and asks his forgiveness.
“Liverpool Oratorio” liner notes
CHIEF MOURNER
O Father, you have given
Time to your children.
You will look after
Those in your care.
WOMEN'S CHORUS (mourners)
We beg you
Look after us.
Father, Father.
CHIEF MOURNER
Father.
WOMEN'S CHORUS
Into the future,
In ever-growing circles,
CHIEF MOURNER
You will be there,
And your spirit will keep us moving
In the right direction.
