On this day, Paul McCartney was fined £10 by Coventry magistrates for speeding along Fletchamstead Highway the previous July. He pleaded guilty by letter and did not appear in court.

The case had been adjourned twice due to delays in receiving Paul’s driving and Road Fund licences, with earlier summonses reportedly lost in his fan mail. He was also accused of driving without a valid Road Fund licence.

Case adjourned – no licence from Beatle

Two motoring summonses against Beatle Paul McCartney were adjourned for two weeks by Coventry magistrates today to enable him to forward his driving licence.

McCartney (23), of 95, Wigmore Street, London, is accused of driving over the speed limit and without an excise licence on Fletchamstead Highway, Coventry, on July 22 last year.

The magistrates were told he had acknowledged receipt of the summonses, but had not forwarded his driving licence. The case had been adjourned previously because the summonses had got mixed up in McCartney’s fan mall.

WHY BEATLE PAUL DIDN’T TAX HIS CAR

Beatle Paul McCartney ran into double trouble the day a police patrol car pulled him up on a busy highway. First they told the pop star that he had been speeding in his Aston Martin. Then they spotted his road fund licence was three months out of date.

Yesterday a court heard that McCartney then said: “I think it has expired. I am far too busy to bother about that.

Chief Inspector Arthur Osman, prosecuting, said that McCartney had been driving at 55 miles an hour in a 40 mile an hour zone. The Beatle had told the police: “It’s a fair cop. I thought I was doing just over 40.

McCartney pleaded guilty to the charges by letter at Coventry. The court ordered him to pay a £10 fine for speeding and also endorsed his licence. He was fined £5 on the licence offence and also ordered to pay £8 6s 8d back-dated duty. All in he was fined £23 6s 8d.

In his letter McCartney explained that staff at the Beatles’ Apple office in London had forgotten to deal with the renewal of the road fund license. But he realised he was “personally and ultimately responsible.
