The former Beatle told students graduating yesterday that the reputation of Lipa-trained artists around the world was “fantastic”.

“Be clear what you want and believe you are going to get it, work hard and you will get it – you are all brilliant.”

Writer Ben Elton, actress Anita Dobson, RSC designer Ralph Koltai, record producer Steve Levine and theatre producer David Pugh were all made Lipa Companions at the graduation ceremony yesterday.

Each industry figure being honoured has taken part in masterclass sessions with Lipa students and has been a supporter of the institute.

Each companion gave a speech, and there were political points over funding and copyright from Ralph Koltai and Steve Levine.

Ben Elton raised laughs with his stand-up style address, and Anita Dobson told the students never to give up their dreams, and despite coming from a poor background she was now “an established actress and married to a doctor of science and rock god Brian May”.

Around 280 students from 26 countries graduated from the performing arts college.

They each received a special Lipa badge from Sir Paul McCartney at the Philharmonic Hall. […]
