“Argylle” is a 2024 spy action comedy film directed and produced by Matthew Vaughn. It was released on February 1, 2024, in the UK.
The Beatles’ last song, “Now And Then”, is included in the soundtrack, and was recreated as a symphony track, played by the Chamber Orchestra or London.
I’m friends with Giles Martin, who produced the song. I was with Giles about a year and a half ago and I said, ‘Giles, I’m struggling to find a love song that has pathos and hope’. Because love songs are usually very sad or very happy, but rarely both. And he goes ‘Well, I’ve got a new Beatles song. Do you want to hear it?’, and I was like, ‘Yeah right, shut up,’ because Giles is a massive joker. And then he played it to me and I thought, ‘I can’t believe I’m hearing a new Beatles song and it’s John Lennon singing’. But I was listening to the lyrics and saying, ‘This sums up the movie. Now and Then! What the hell?’
We literally just slapped it on the movie and we didn’t have to re-edit a single scene. It was as if the song was written for the movie. And then we orchestrated it, you know, for the hell of it.
And then we had to get permission and it was an absolute joy to get to meet Sir Paul McCartney and all the other members of the Beatles’ family. What an honour!
If somebody had said to me, ‘You’ll end up getting to work with The Beatles on their last ever song, in your film,’ I would have said, ‘You’re out of your mind!’. It was a privilege and an honour, and I feel blessed and extremely lucky that it happened.
