Vee-Jay Records re-released Please Please Me as a single in the United States on January 3, 1964, catalogued as VJ 581. The song had first been issued in America in February 1963 but had made little commercial impact. With The Beatles’ I Want To Hold Your Hand climbing the Billboard Hot 100 and the group’s first US visit less than five weeks away, Vee-Jay moved quickly to capitalise on the growing interest in the group’s back catalogue.
