Keith Drewett

Back in 1968 a friend that I knew by the name of Farnham Haines came into the shop where I worked in Chipping Sodbury and asked me if I could record some songs at his house at Old Sodbury. I was a roadie for a local band and had experience in recording the band. I turned up at Farnham's house that weekend where Farnham had invited a couple of lads from Wales over to demo some of thier songs, The lads went by the names of Drew & Dye. We recorded them with Farnham on guitar, I also remember a double bass, Drew and Dye and a roaring fire in the grate. A week or so afterwards Farnham came into the shop where I was working and said, " I've taken the tapes you made up to London and have been around the record companies and you will never guess who has listened to them." I said to him, "I'm not going to know unless you tell me." He said that Paul McCartney had heard them and recorded some tracks with the lads. I was sceptical as Fareham had a good sense of humour and was always joking. Farnham then showed me a photograph with Farnham, Drew and Dye with Paul McCartney. Farnham then pulled out a small stack of blank Apple labels and said that these were the new record labels for The Beatles. Farnham also had an acetate recording of Drew and Dye with Paul McCartney on piano. He then said that he had heard the new Beatles record in the studio with lots of people singing on the recording, coming from speakers all around. This song turned out to be Hey Jude.

I always remember one of Drew and Dye's song titles that resonated with me over the years which was "Taurus The Bull."

There was no chance meeting at the Apple Store, Farnham had done the leg work around the record companies.

The last I heard of Farnham was that he has moved to Fowey in Cornwall many, many years ago.
