I got the call the day before to cover for a sick trumpet player. Needless to say, I was thrilled. We were booked for a 7-hr session, but it turned out they only needed trumpets for one page of music, so we only played for thirty minutes or so.
Paul was great, he came out and introduced himself to all of us before the session, and then came back to the trumpets afterwards and picked up a horn to play “When The Saints Go Marching In”. It was definitely surreal to hear his voice speaking to us from the control room over our headphones! Sadly, the union forbid us, musicians, from asking for photos, so the recording credit Is really all I have…Interview courtesy of Tony Guerrero, September 2020
