“Get Back” promo film broadcast in the UK
Apr 17, 1969
On April 17, 1969, the BBC1 programme Top of the Pops aired a clip of The Beatles performing “Get Back” on the rooftop of the Apple building, filmed on January 30, 1969. This marked the first time footage from the rooftop concert was broadcast on television. The clip was shown in black and white and was repeated on April 24, May 15, and May 22.
On Christmas Day, it was eventually broadcast in colour for the first time in the UK.
Beatle happening in the autumn
BEATLES will be back on TV soon — probably on tonight’s (Thursday) “Top Of The Pops” — to promote their new single, “Get Back.”
They will be seen in a special film clip from the still-uncompleted documentary built around their Apple recording and rehearsing activities.
But the spectacular itself, plus the next Beatles album and an accompanying 160-page illustrated book, will not be released now until the autumn. The book, written by David Dalton and Jonathan Cott, will be sold as part of the LP package.
Beatles themselves have still not made a definite decision about a return to touring. Says Apple press officer Derek Taylor: “Nobody knows yet what they will do. But if they don’t make up their minds this year — then forget it!”
● Widespread rumours in the City that the Beatles plan a counter bid in the ATV/Northern Songs takeover battle were also unconfirmed this week. John and Paul have, however, advised their shareholders not to sell. Added Taylor: “They just don’t want to sell. They don’t want to be owned by ATV.”
