As part of the promotional campaign for his forthcoming album “The Boys Of Dungeon Lane“, Paul McCartney took part in an onstage conversation with British comedian Rob Brydon at the Roundhouse in London, in front of an audience of around 1,300 people. The event followed a format similar to the listening sessions previously held in Los Angeles and at Abbey Road ahead of the album’s release.

Paul brought an acoustic guitar with him and used it to demonstrate the opening chords of “As You Lie There”. He also performed a brief acoustic rendition of “Life Can Be Hard”, including the song’s opening line.

A once in a lifetime experience last night talking to @paulmccartney at @theroundhouse about his beautiful number one album #theboysofdungeonlane We sat and listened to the whole album and he told us stories of his remarkable life that continues to bring joy to millions all over the world. Paul McCartney: Serious question? Drugs. [Laughs – then mentioning vegetarianism and pilates] When I wrote ‘When I’m 64‘, I was thinking, ‘64? Oh, my God, that’s so old.’ And then I go, oh, I’m 64. Oh, now I’m 74 and now I’m going to be 84. […]

These days, I do a bit of exercise. You know, whereas at school, I hated physical education. Now I go to the gym, do a bit of Pilates. It’s good.

Is your hearing still strong?

It can be dodgy. It’s pretty good but sometimes, you know, what happens is you miss little bits of words so it can get weird. I was talking to Nancy one time and it turns out she was talking about food or something but I misheard it and I said, ‘What’s Sid Bernstein got to do with it?’ Anyway, she wasn’t talking about Sid Bernstein. You know, when we were kids, you just look at a lot of old people and, in truth, you think they’re a bit thick. You do really. […] What happens is also, actually, as your hearing goes, you realise now that older people just couldn’t hear the question. […]

About “Momma Gets By“:

Sometimes you write songs about somebody you know, or an experience that you’ve had. And sometimes you just make ‘em up ‘cause you’re in a more theatrical mood. I imagined this [track] like a play. I don’t know the characters, but I’m imagining the woman and then the song is told from the perspective of the kid. So it just kind of unfolded itself. I was imagining the musical Porgy and Bess and that sort of thing. It’s like a little theatrical story; a little musical theatre moment about this woman.

Some people would say, ‘Oh, she’s a bit of a sucker ‘cause the guy’s a bit of a waster.’ But for me she’s a very strong woman and it explains that in the song. I’m very proud of her and women like her… There’s a lot of strong women out there.

About “Spinal Tap” and the death of its director Rob Reiner:

It was great being in that film, because I just love Spinal Tap. The way they make the films, it’s very improvised. And actually what made it really important to me was that Rob Reiner directed it. [Applause] Let’s hear it for Rob! [Rob’s death] added some sad bittersweet edge to it.

London, Tuesday 2 June 2026: Paul McCartney has announced a special evening at the Roundhouse in London on Wednesday 10th June, where he will discuss his acclaimed new album, The Boys of Dungeon Lane, and the journey behind its creation.

In this unique live event, Paul will reflect on the making of the album from its earliest beginnings, sharing stories and insights from his first meeting with producer Andrew Watt in 2021 through to the recording process, songwriting, duetting with Ringo for the first time, artwork development and the album’s release last week. The audience will gain a rare, first-hand perspective on how The Boys of Dungeon Lane came to life, and hear the new music played amongst Paul’s stories.

Please note this event is unreserved seating. Upstairs seating has a small amount of stairs.
