Paul McCartney calls on the UK to pass AI copyright transparency law

Last updated on May 15, 2025

Paul McCartney was among 400 figures from the UK’s creative industry — including Elton John, Kate Bush, Coldplay, and Dua Lipa — who signed an open letter supporting a push to require AI companies to disclose the copyrighted works used to train their models.

The letter backs an amendment to the UK’s Data (Use and Access) Bill, introduced by Beeban Kidron, which seeks to add this transparency requirement. The UK government has expressed opposition to the proposal.

On May 13, the House of Lords approved the amendment by a vote of 272 to 125. The bill now returns to the House of Commons, where the amendment could still be overturned.
