In an article published on June 4, 2026, the Liverpool Echo reported that the Dungeon Lane street sign in Liverpool had disappeared. The sign was still in place on May 29, the day Paul McCartney released his album “The Boys Of Dungeon Lane.”
Paul responded to the incident with a humorous video in which he appeared holding a Dungeon Lane street sign and joked: “Someone nicked the sign from Dungeon Lane in Liverpool. I have no idea who it was, but I’ve got my suspicions.”
Since the album was announced in March 2026, Dungeon Lane had become a popular destination for Beatles and Paul McCartney fans, many of whom visited the site that inspired the album’s title.
The Boys of Dungeon Lane is out, and early on in the campaign someone nicked the sign from Dungeon Lane in Liverpool. I have no idea who it was, but I’ve got my suspicions.
Paul McCartney – From Instagram, June 3, 2026

From Liverpool Echo, June 4, 2026:
[…] A new street sign was installed on Dungeon Lane in early May in response to increased interest from tourists after McCartney announced the album in March. The record features an image of the street sign on the cover. But the sign has now vanished. When the ECHO visited the scene close to John Lennon Airport on Thursday (June 4), the frame for the street sign stood empty. […]
The sign was restored by the city council after requests by tour guides as Beatles fans flocked to Speke to see the road, close to one of Paul’s childhood homes. […]
A Liverpool City Council spokesperson said: “It’s deeply disappointing to see that someone has acted selfishly by stealing the sign for Dungeon Lane. These signs are an important part of our streets and reinstalling them costs both taxpayers’ money and staff time. With the release of Paul McCartney’s new album, we knew that the signage would be popular, and we would expect visitors to show it the proper respect. When the sign is replaced, we ask people to think of others and to take only photos.”
