About
From nationaljazzarchive.org.uk:
British trumpeter Stan Roderick was born in Barrow-in-Furnace, Cumbria. He worked initially in a band in Aberdeen and moved to London in 1935, experiencing as a musician the variety of its interwar night club music scene. He played at the Café de Paris, the Shim-Sham Club then known as ‘London’s miniature Harlem’, and at the upmarket Ciro’s, before joining Jack Hylton’s orchestra in 1939.
After wartime army service he worked with the bands of Harry Parry, Harry Roy and Harry Hayes. From 1945 he was a member of Ted Heath’s orchestra and then joined the Skyrockets band in 1950–1. Thereafter he worked with many different dance orchestras and showbands including Cyril Stapleton’s BBC Showband from 1952 to 1957.
An exemplary, much in-demand, big band lead trumpeter, from the 1960s he worked mainly as a freelance and accompanied many Americans stars, including Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee, Lena Horne, Nat ‘King’ Cole and Dizzy Gillespie.
Stanley Roderick played the trumpet on The Beatles’ song “Strawberry Fields Forever“.
