On November 23, 1965, The Beatles gathered at Twickenham Film Studios to film a series of promotional films, later known collectively as the Intertel promos (named after Intertel, the video production company used for the shoot). Five songs were taped that day: their new double-A side single “We Can Work It Out” / “Day Tripper“, as well as earlier 1965 hits “I Feel Fine“, “Ticket to Ride” and “Help!“.
The Beatles filmed three promotional films for “Day Tripper.”
For the third promo film, The Beatles wore the military-style jackets they had previously worn for their Shea Stadium concert in August 1965. The set was dressed with “travel-themed” props. John and Paul stand cheerfully behind a vintage 1920s-style aeroplane prop, as if about to depart on a journey, while George and Ringo position themselves inside a mock railway carriage, peering out through its windows as they mime their parts. During the performance, Ringo abandons his drumsticks, picks up a large hand saw, and theatrically “saws” through part of the wooden railway carriage set.
It is not known with certainty whether this version or the second promo film was broadcast on UK television in December 1965.
It was released on the 2015 “1+” DVD/Blu-Ray compilation.
This second version, featuring the band wearing their ‘Shea Stadium’ jackets, was filmed during one marathon session at Twickenham Studios when they made ten separate videos. The general anarchy that prevails heralded the style of music video that would become so popular from the 1980s onwards, with no attempt made to even pretend to be playing instruments.
