On April 22, 1965, during the filming for “Help!” at Twickenham Film Studios, The Beatles were filmed performing the title track. The scene was in black and white in the film, as to appear as a television appearance (UK TV was then broadcast only in B&W). In the film, an exasperated Clang, played by Leo McKern, threw darts at the screen while watching The Beatles’ performance.
The footage, minus Clang, was distributed by NEMS Enterprises to television companies to promote the “Help!” single, released in July 1965. It was for instance broadcast on Top Of The Pops on July 29 and August 19.
