I Feel Fine (Intertel promo video - version 2)
1965 • For The Beatles • Directed by Joe McGrath
On November 23, 1965, The Beatles gathered at Twickenham Film Studios to film a series of promotional films, later known collectively as the Intertel promos (named after Intertel, the video production company used for the shoot). Five songs were taped that day: their new double-A side single “We Can Work It Out” / “Day Tripper“, as well as earlier 1965 hits “I Feel Fine“, “Ticket to Ride” and “Help!“.
The Beatles filmed two promotional films for “I Feel Fine.”
In the first promo, The Beatles arrive on set to “perform” I Feel Fine but immediately you can tell it’s tongue-in-cheek. The setting is a bare room containing only a few incongruous props: a punchball (boxing speed bag), a stationary exercise bicycle, and two sets of weights lying on the floor.
As the song begins, Paul, John and George appear holding their instruments. Paul and John sing directly into the camera, while George delivers his vocal into the punchball as if it were a microphone. Ringo then appears and begins riding the exercise bike. Throughout the clip, the band does a half-hearted job of pretending to play – it’s clear they’re prioritizing the visual gag.
This promo film was shown on the special 1965 year-end edition of the BBC’s “Top Of The Pops“, on December 25, 1965.
It was released on the 2015 “1+” DVD/Blu-Ray compilation.
