Circa October or November 1965 (the exact date is unknown), The Beatles took part in their second formal photo session with photographer Robert Whitaker; the first had taken place in late 1964. Also attending the session was photographer Bill Francis.
Over the course of the day, a wide range of visual concepts and settings were explored. One of the sets was designed by British graphic designer Stuart Brisley and theatrical decorator Carol Russell, and incorporated mirrors, silver foil, polyethylene film and polystyrene blocks.
One photograph from the session was used as the cover of the British EP “Yesterday”, released on March 4, 1966. Another appeared on the cover of the Beatles’ 1966 US tour programme. A further image from the same session was later reused for promotional purposes for The Beatles’ four-part biopic series in 2024–2025.
The Beatles would work with Whitaker in the studio once again in March 1966, for the infamous “butcher” photo session.
