Paul McCartney was asked to contribute three songs to the soundtrack of “The Magic Christian,” a new film starring Peter Sellers and Ringo Starr. Seeing an opportunity for The Iveys, a Welsh-English rock band signed to Apple, Paul offered them one of his own compositions, “Come and Get It,” and invited them to contribute the other two tracks. He also took on the role of producer for the three songs: “Come and Get It”, “Carry On Till Tomorrow”, and “Rock of All Ages”, which were recorded at Abbey Road Studios in August 1969.
Ahead of the release of the single “Come And Get It / Rock of All Ages,” The Iveys changed their name to Badfinger.
The single was released on Apple Records on 5 December 1969 in the UK, but not until 12 January 1970 in the US. “Come and Get It” was a hit single for the band, peaking at number 7 in the United States, and number 4 in the United Kingdom.
Ringo, Paul, help boost new group
In case you haven’t been reading the NME news pages (naughty!), I should tell you that Badfinger was formerly known as the Iveys, and the group features this Paul McCartney composition on the soundtrack of the Ringo Starr-Peter Sellers movie “The Magic Christian.” All of which makes a promising launching pad for this disc. It has a forceful ensemble vocal and a solid mid-tempo beat, emphasised by tambourine and clanking piano. Plus a pleasant tune that’s decidedly hummable. In with a chance, specially with the movie to boost it.
