UK classical viola player. Following six years as co-principal viola of The London Symphony Orchestra (1949-1954), he devoted himself to chamber music. A former member of the Hirsch String Quartet for 12 years, he was a principal member of The Academy Of St. Martin-in-the-Fields from 1961. He was a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music, and Professor of viola there, from 1965 onwards. Stephen was one of the five founding directors of ASM (orchestra) Ltd from June 1971.


Stephen Shingles played viola on two Beatles track, “Eleanor Rigby” (from the “Revolver” album released in 1966) and “She’s Leaving Home” (from the “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” album released in 1967).


I got about £5 [ie the standard Musicians’ Union session fee which was £9] and it made billions of pounds. And like idiots we gave them all our ideas for free.
