1965 • For The Beatles
On November 23, 1965, The Beatles gathered at Twickenham Film Studios to film a series of promotional films, later known collectively as the Intertel promos (named after Intertel, the video production company used for the shoot). Five songs were taped that day: their new double-A side single “We Can Work It Out” / “Day Tripper“, as well as earlier 1965 hits “I Feel Fine“, “Ticket to Ride” and “Help!“.
The “Ticket To Ride” promo film featured a backdrop made up of oversized reproductions of railway and bus tickets — a literal visualisation of the song’s title — plastered behind the band.
In front of this backdrop, The Beatles perform the song with their usual instruments: Paul on bass, John on guitar, George on guitar and Ringo on his drum kit. Paul, John and George are seated in director’s chairs. The group is dressed predominantly in black, with John standing out in white trousers. While the enlarged ticket graphics add a touch of visual interest, the performance itself is largely straightforward, with the band delivering a conventional mimed rendition.
This promo film was shown on the special 1965 year-end edition of the BBC’s “Top Of The Pops“, on December 25, 1965.
It was released on the 2015 “1+” DVD/Blu-Ray compilation.
