AlbumSome of the songs worked on during this session were first released on the "Rubber Soul (1987 mix)" CD
For the re-release of the “Help!” and “Rubber Soul” albums on CD in April 1987, producer George Martin decided to remix both records, considering that the original stereo mixes prepared in November 1965 were unsatisfactory.
These 1987 remixes were later reused for the remastered editions of “Help!” and “Rubber Soul” released in 2009.
[In December, EMI] also asked me to look at the next batch of records, which is, “Help!” “Rubber Soul” and “Revolver,” which are due to come out in April. And I looked at those and found that the stereos of that weren’t very good. They were very woolly, and not at all what I thought should be a good issue. I went back to the four-tracks on those and actually did remix them — not changing anything, but hardening up the sound a little bit, and cutting down a little background noise. By going back to the four tracks, we get a cleaner sound even than you can get with contemporary recording, because four-track one-inch is a much better medium than 24 track two-inch.
George Martin – Interview with Allan Kozinn, February 1987
Rubber Soul and Help! were remixed by my dad in 1988 or ’87 for CD. And when we did “Love”, we got to do Yesterday, and I couldn’t understand why there were so much echo and reverb on the voice ’cause it was very non-Beatles. And it was only when I came back and I was listening to the remasters I asked “how come this is the case?” and they said “well we are remastering the eighties versions of [Rubber Soul and Help!]” and I said “why aren’t we remastering the originals, we should remaster what came out then [in 1965]?” And they said “Well, your father wouldn’t be very happy with us not remastering the versions he did in the eighties.” So I spoke to my dad and I asked “Do you mind if they remaster the sixties version?” and he went “I don’t even remember doing them in the eighties!”
Giles Martin – Interview with Detroit’s Classic Rock station – Quoted in The 1987 CD mixes – The Daily Beatle
The remasters were based on the master-tapes, with the exception of two albums: George Martin’s 1987 mixes of Help! and Rubber Soul. People are questioning why we used those. George Martin is the fifth Beatle. He chose to do it. You can argue with him, but I’m not going to.
