On this Sunday, in a session lasting from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., “Help!“, the title track of The Beatles’ new film, was mixed in both mono and stereo. The song had been recorded on April 13, 1965, but its lead and backing vocals were re-recorded during a subsequent session at CTS Studios sometime between April 14 and April 17.
According to John Barrett’s notes, compiled while cataloguing EMI’s Beatles tape library in circa 1982–83, the mono mixing work on “Help!” carried out during this session did not include a “Remix Mono 1”. Instead, “Remix Mono 2+3” and “Remix Mono 4 (film mix)” were created, both incorporating the replacement lead and backing vocals recorded at CTS Studios. It is generally believed that RM4 was also used for the released mono version on the “Help!” album.
A “Remix Stereo 1” was also prepared and labelled “production acetate”. Unlike the mono mixes, it used the original vocals recorded on April 13. However, this mix was not issued, and a new stereo mix intended for release would be created on June 18.
During the same session, “Remix Stereo 2” of Take 2 of “The Night Before” was also made. John Barrett’s notes identify it as a “Film Mix.”
