‘Made in Rockdown’
50 years following the release of his self-titled first solo album McCartney, featuring Paul playing every instrument and writing and recording every song, Paul McCartney will release McCartney III on December 11th. Paul hadn’t planned to release an album in 2020, but in the isolation of ‘Rockdown,’ he soon found himself fleshing out some existing musical sketches and creating even more new ones. Before long an eclectic collection of spontaneous songs would become McCartney III: a stripped-back, self-produced and, quite literally, solo work marking the opening of a new decade, in the tradition of 1970’s McCartney and 1980’s McCartney II. Recorded earlier this year in Sussex (UK), McCartney III is mostly built from live takes of Paul on vocals and guitar or piano, overdubbing his bass playing, drumming, etc. atop that foundation. McCartney III spans a vast and intimate range of modes and moods, from soul-searching to wistful, from playful to raucous and all points between — captured with some of the same gear from Paul’s Rude Studio used as far back as 1971 Wings sessions. And Paul’s array of vintage instruments he played on the new album have an even more storied history, including Bill Black of Elvis Presley’s original trio’s double bass alongside Paul’s own iconic Hofner violin bass, and a mellotron from Abbey Road Studios used on Beatles recordings, to name but a few. Just as McCartney’s 1970 release marked Paul’s return to basics in the wake of the biggest band break-up in musical history, and the 1980 avant-garde masterpiece McCartney II rose from the ashes of Wings, McCartney III finds Paul back on his own, turning unexpected circumstances into a personal snapshot of a timeless artist at a unique point in history.

Hi from Italy, I'm quite puzzled by this limited edition, as I've just received my two copies of this LP and they are numbered 3033/9200 and 3034/9200, while I read that this press should be limited to 3.000 copies only. I'm also puzzled by the numbering, not printed but hand-made with silver ink. Does this sound genuine? I got them from Universal Music so I'd say it can be considered "a safe place to buy from". Has anyone got the same doubt? What numbers did you get? Thanks. Fabio

Hi Fabio, you are not the only one, who has questioned how the numbering was done. I don't know what it means, to be honest. I guess time will tell (either the numbering didn't start at 1, or there were 3 batches - 3000 for UK, 3000 for US, 3000 for ??, or...)

Hi,
I am form Austria, the neighbour country from Italy. I bought 2 red albums and my have the numbers 8644 and 8648. It seems that the red release was numbered from 1-3000: pressed in the US (Third Man Records) and from 3001-9200 pressed in Europe. This indicates that the total amount of the red vinyl release were limited to 9.200 copies. 3.000 were pressed in the US and 6.200 copies were pressed in Europe.

Hi again,
I just checked the info your referred to - the website of Paul McCartney’s UK official shop. They deleted the following information: "Limited-edition (3000 units worldwide)". It seems they also recognized in the mean while that they have done a mistake, because the red vinyl copies in Europe were limited to 6200, as indicated by the official numbering on the backside of the sleeves. Hence, please change your information under
ABOUT:
Limited to 6200 copies.
Thank you.
Regards,
Andreas

Hi Everybody, thanks for commenting. In the meantime I've sent an email to Universal Music Italy asking for clarifications and they replied they have enquired the manufacturer for the same. I will post the reply theyìll eventually send me. Bye for now and Happy New Year!!!

My UK red vinyl is numbered in the 6000s out of 9200. The back sleeve has the hand numbering and the Capital/MPL/TMR logos but the label has just the Capital/MPL logos. Looking online it looks like the US TMR red version has the same sleeve but with more writing on the label and all three logos, as pressed in the US (Detroit?). I assume mine was pressed in UK/EU but both pressings use the same sleeve. I asked the official UK store why when I preordered it said 3000 worldwide, but had no reply (yet).

Thanks guys !! A new Discogs entry ( https://www.discogs.com/Paul-McCartney-McCartney-III/release/16714536 ) now indicates "Red vinyl version sold on paulmccartney.com official site. Pressed in the EU, hand numbered from 0001 to 9200."... Who really knows !

At least you guys are getting the vinyl: I pre-order the US TMR edition (Limited to 3000) on October 2020, it was sent on the 20th December but never arrived. After complaining because it failed to arrive in Mid February 2021, both to the Paul McCartney Store and Delivery Company, replied saying it got lost and were not responsible/aware if the delivery status....I asked a refund. The most annoying and disturbing is that the delivery service used does not include a tracking number after it's handled to another company that will deliver in Europe/Portugal. This is a very bad service from the official PM store or the agreements they have... very sad.

Hi hugo, I'm based in France, and received mine in January ... No tracking, no message.. but in the end, I got it ! Sad the customer service has been so poor in your case !!

Mine is un numbered, can you tell me anything about this one?
Many thanks,
Kev

Hi Kevin, no, I can't ! Another mystery ! So hard to keep track of all the variations. On Steve Hoffman's Forums, you might have a bit of luck, as there were countless discussions on this various vinyl editions !
