In June 2022, Paul McCartney headlined the Glastonbury Festival at the age of 80. This year, he made a return to Glastonbury, but in a different role – as an enthusiastic spectator. He was spotted enjoying some performances from the side of the stage and also exchanging with some artists backstage.

Among the acts that caught Paul’s attention were the Foo Fighters, Guns N’ Roses, The Pretenders, and Elton John.

From No One Had a Better Time at Glastonbury Than Paul McCartney (, June 26, 2023:

After headlining himself last year, Paul McCartney returned to Glastonbury in 2023 as a spectator. And by all accounts, he had one hell of a time.

McCartney was seen watching several of the weekend’s performances from the side of the stage. On Friday, he took in Foo Fighters’ surprise set. On Saturday, he watched as Guns N’ Roses covered Wings’ “Live and Let Die.” And on Sunday, he was capturing his own cell phone video of Elton John performing “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me.”

Macca also briefly popped up on stage during Pretenders’ Saturday set, where he gave the crowd a quick wave. He hung out backstage with Chrissie Hynde, posed for a photo with Foo Fighters drummer Josh Freese (and Pat Smear), and even took in a sun set with his wife Nancy Shevell.

From Josh Freese on Instagram, June 24, 2023 – If someone’s going to photobomb your pic with Paul McCartney, at least it’s Pat Smear.
From Overtonedee on Instagram, June 27, 2023 – Comin up in the world finally with Paul McCartney. I’m still pinching myself. Not to be confused with my old punk skool mucker from “Bam Bam & the calling”, ( @pj.mccartney )both established poets in their own right.

From Sir Paul McCartney’s question to Scouse dad after bumping into him at Glastonbury – Liverpool Echo, June 25, 2023 – A dad at his seventh Glastonbury said it is his “luckiest” year yet after sharing a view of the sunset with Beatles legend Sir Paul McCartney. Joseph Foley, better known as Joey, 62, from Bootle, made the trip down south to Worthy Farm with friends and family and had been enjoying the hot weather and “glorious sunshine” over the first four days of the festival. On Saturday evening, June 24, the life-long Liverpool fan was in The Park area of the site to watch English-American rock band The Pretenders. Having covered around 18 km on foot during the day, Joey said he felt completely “wiped out” and so went towards the hill overlooking the stage area to relax. At the perimeter of the festival taking in the sunset, he said he then saw a jeep pull up nearby. Seeing the vehicle at the highest point of the festival, Joey commented that the driver had “done well getting up there in the jeep,” adding: “they must be Scouse.” Joey’s prediction then came true when none other than Sir Paul McCartney stepped outside of the vehicle to take in the sights. The former Beatle had been among the audience for The Pretenders who’d recently finished their set on the The Park Stage near by. Sir Paul made a brief cameo on stage following the performance.
