[…] Paul McCartney is no stranger to spatial audio, having recently overseen immersive remixes of classic Wings material as well as his own McCartney trilogy of solo albums. So it comes as no surprise that Dungeon Lane was made available from the get-go with a Dolby Atmos, most likely created by Giles Martin and Steve Orchard. Not every track is a surround spectacular, but overall I felt the immersive mix was very tastefully executed and suits the material well–even if there were some missed opportunities to more boldly utilize the expanded soundstage. […]
All in all, The Boys of Dungeon Lane proves that Paul McCartney’s creative engine isn’t slowing down anytime soon. Though this music would be enjoyable in any format, I think the Atmos mix is easily the most fun way to listen–it really puts you inside the record, peeling back the layers on Watt’s elaborate production without losing too much cohesion and organic energy. If anything, I think it could’ve been just a bit more daring at times.
As is the case with any streaming-exclusive Atmos music release, the question fans inevitably start to ask is: will there eventually be a hi-res release? MPL Communications recently experimented with a limited run of Atmos Blu-Rays for the WINGS compilation, so I suppose anything’s possible. But until such a release materializes, be sure to check out this fantastic new entry in the McCartney canon via your immersive streaming platform of choice.
