When the Beatles’ recording contract with EMI expired in January 1976, EMI was free to re-release music from the Beatles’ catalogue. In 1978, they issued “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band“/”With a Little Help from My Friends” as the A-side of a single, with “A Day in the Life” as the B-side.
The single was released on Capitol in the US on August 14, closely following the release of the “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” film, and reached number 71 on September 30, 1978, where it stayed for two weeks. The single was issued on Parlophone in the UK in September.
The UK sleeve was a variation of the “Sgt. Pepper” album cover, featuring The Beatles minus the celebrities in the background. In 1967, Sir Joseph Lockwood, EMI chairman, was concerned about the legal implications of having all those celebrities on an album sleeve. He suggested an alternative cover design in which all the individuals behind the Beatles were removed, but the Beatles declined this proposal. The 1978 sleeve is a reminiscence of this proposal.
