Amazon (worldwide) and the official Paul McCartney online store (in the US only) each offered an exclusive track-by-track commentary version of “The Boys Of Dungeon Lane“. However, neither version contained commentary for all of the album’s songs. Each included commentary for only half of the tracks, meaning that fans had to purchase both editions to obtain Paul McCartney’s commentary for the entire album.
Hey, this is Paul McCartney. Welcome to my track by track listening party of my new album the Boys of Dungeon Lane on Amazon Music.
So the album is called [The Boys Of] Dungeon Lane and when I was in Liverpool as a kid we lived on Forthlin Road. I used to wander down Dungeon Lane with my observer book of birds and you know, spot birds and nests and all of that stuff, you know. So on the album artwork there’s birds hidden, so you’ve got to discover what every one of them is.
I started it when my manager, Scott, said to me, “Would you like to meet this young LA producer Andrew Watt?” I said, “Yeah, okay, we’ll go and have a cup of tea or something.” So I went around there to his studio. He had a studio in the basement of what had been Charlie Chaplin’s house. It was a good little studio, he’d done a lot of good work there.
So I thought I’ll go and say hi, you know. So I had a cup of tea and we’re just chatting. We talked about writing songs. I said, “Well, sometimes I’ll just take a guitar and like just plonk a chord maybe. I don’t even know what it is but it’ll start me off, it’ll give me an idea. “Oh yeah,” you know. So I said, “If I had a guitar I’d show you what I mean.” He said, “Well, I’ve got one.” I said, “Oh, okay,” now I’m working. So I said, “Yeah, okay, great,” I said, “but I’m left-handed.” He said, “Yeah, it’s left-handed.” Alright, he’s thought of everything. So I just banged like any old chord, I’ve now since learned it [plays chord] and I thought, “Wow, okay, that’s a weird chord.” [plays the chord again] And then I changed that top note to like, [plays slightly different chord] it started to make a bit more sense and I changed it again. [plays another chord] So we had, like, a three-chord sequence. So that was it. And so suddenly I was now making an album with Andrew. […]
Thanks for listening to the track by track listening experience of my album the Boys of Dungeon Lane on Amazon Music.
