Genoa • 4.30pm show

The previous day, The Beatles and their entourage had a day off in Milan following their first two Italian concerts on June 24. On the morning of June 25, they travelled by road to Genoa, a journey of around 150 km. They were driven in four cars by members of a racing team. Sources differ on the makes of the vehicles, with some identifying them as Alfa Romeos and others as Fiats.

Later that day, they held a press conference at the Hotel Colombia Excelsior before performing two concerts at the 25,000-seat Palazzo dello Sport. The first began at 4 p.m. and the second at 9 p.m. Peppino di Capri, Fausto Leali, Angela Tarenzi, New Dada, and Guidone were the opening acts.

As in Milan, many seats remained empty. The afternoon concert attracted only around 5,000 fans.

We had four Fiats, each with a member of the Italian racing team taking us about. George and I were in one of the cars and, boy, they were good. I thought I was a decent driver, but these guys…
