2020 was marked by a global health crisis due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). This crisis put a halt to the daily routine of billions of people throughout the world, forcing people to stay confined at home… including Paul McCartney.
McCartney hadn’t planned to release an album in 2020, but being in lock-down in Sussex close to his Hog Hill Mill studio, he spent time fleshing out some existing musical sketches and creating new ones. This effort would become “McCartney III“, a self-produced, solo effort, in the same spirit of in the tradition of 1970’s McCartney and 1980’s McCartney II albums.
The marketing team at Capitol Records went over the top with this release, with numerous limited editions of the album – in colored vinyls, in CDs with colored variations of the dice theme, with some bonus tracks dispatched across releases, three different back covers, a track list different on CDs & vinyls… But in the end, it paid off, as McCartney succeeded at getting his first Number 1 album in the UK, since 1989’s “Flowers In The Dirt“.
