About

Beginning in 2017, Giles Martin embarked on a mission to bring a contemporary sound to the Beatles album, aligning these remixes with the 50th anniversaries of their original releases. This journey of sonic rejuvenation started with “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” in 2017, followed by the White Album in 2018Abbey Road in 2019, and Let It Be in 2020, though the latter’s release shifted to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Remixing the albums recorded before “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” presented a unique set of challenges. Up until “Revolver,” the Beatles primarily utilized 4-track recording machines. This method often resulted in multiple instruments being recorded on a single track, complicating efforts to individually adjust or enhance specific instruments. This situation persisted to some degree in later albums like “Sgt. Pepper’s,” though the band’s shift to 8-track machines offered more flexibility.

A groundbreaking solution emerged from MAL, a state-of-the-art de-mixing technology, crafted by Emile de la Rey’s award-winning sound team at Peter Jackson’s WingNut Films Productions Ltd. Originally developed for Peter Jackson’s “Get Back” docu-series, MAL (Machine Assisted Learning) ingeniously isolates instruments recorded on a single track.

Giles Martin harnessed this innovative technology to create stereo remixes and Dolby Atmos remixes of “Revolver” songs.

Revolver is an album where you could listen to each song and go, ‘Oh, this is the direction they’re going to go in next.’ And be wrong every single time. The Beatles are all in the same zone, coming of age. But it’s four individual members, with four eclectic styles, all willing to surf the same wave. And that’s what this album’s about. It’s about that ‘What have you got? How crazy is it? Well, I can out-crazy you.’

Giles Martin – From rollingstone.co.uk, September 7, 2022

When Paul sat with me and listened to it, he said, ‘This is the record that is four individuals collaborating.’ It’s the decline of Beatlemania. ‘Phony Beatlemania has bitten the dust,’ as the Clash once said. They’re no longer a four-headed beast on Revolver. They have their different styles. But no matter what they try, they’re still the Beatles. There’s not even a thought of a world outside of the Beatles. There’s no women in their lives, as close as they are to each other. They’re in bed thoroughly, and they’re looking forward to being in bed together. They’ve come off tour, and they want to make great records.

Giles Martin – From rollingstone.co.uk, September 7, 2022

When I listened to the Revolver outtakes, after having done Get Back, I listened to the outtakes, I thought, ‘Oh, this is actually the real fun.’ On Get Back, they’re trying to get this feeling, get the breath of fresh air, whereas in Revolver it’s just the air they breathe. This is just endless enthusiasm. There’s no post-apocalyptic vision. There hasn’t been a bust-up and they haven’t got back together, nor have they walked out yet.

Giles Martin – From rollingstone.co.uk, September 7, 2022

The new mix from Giles Martin and Sam Okell goes beyond what they did with previous Deluxe Editions, thanks to the “de-mixing” technology developed by the audio team led by Emile de la Rey at Peter Jackson’s WingNut Films Productions Ltd. It was devised for Get Back, to separate individual Beatle voices from the audio murk of the original film footage. Remember the scene where they cut through the cafeteria clatter to focus on John and Paul’s voices, getting emotional over George, with a microphone planted in a flowerpot? That’s what they do to Ringo’s drum kit. It sounds amazing.

As Martin explains, “There’s no one who’s getting audio even close as to what Peter Jackson’s guys can do. The funny thing, they won’t let anyone else use it—they may do eventually. But Peter’s such a big Beatles fan, he’s willing to help out. I quite like that in a way, that the Beatles are still using technologies that no one else is using. It’s really groundbreaking. The simplest way I can explain it: it’s like you giving me a cake, and then me going back to you about an hour later with flour, eggs, sugar, and all the ingredients to that cake, that all haven’t got any cake mix left on them.

Giles Martin – From rollingstone.co.uk, September 7, 2022

From Abbey Road Studios on Facebook – Tomorrow The Beatles ‘Revolver’ Special Edition comes out on digital platforms, CD and vinyl! Discover hours of unreleased Beatles material mastered and cut by Abbey Road’s Alex Wharton, hear Giles Martin and Sam Okell’s brand new Dolby Atmos and stereo mixes mastered and cut by Miles Showell, and revisit the original mono mix remastered and cut by Abbey Road’s Sean Magee.

What was the first step after you said, “OK, Revolver is next”?

Well, it’s not a question of “Revolver is next.” After Sgt. Pepper, which was very well accepted, everyone asked me when I was going to do Revolver, and the answer was that I couldn’t really remix it until we unwrapped the [de-mixing] technology, which we did during the Get Back movie and Let It Be [box set]. The Beatles said, “Can we do [Revolver]?” I said, “I’ll have a look.”

We developed the technology to a certain extent where it’s actually possible to do it. That’s when the decision was made. It was not based on marketing or a timeline or a roadmap or anything like that. It was purely based on the set of circumstances.

What had you already learned from working on the previous Special Editions that came in handy on Revolver?

Part of my job is to respect the decisions [the Beatles] were making and that my dad was making at the time, to almost retrace what they would’ve done if they’d had the same technology at their fingertips as I did. This isn’t my interpretation of what I think Revolver should really be like. There’s an intimacy in the experience of listening to the band. I’m so privileged to be able to walk into Abbey Road Studios and press Play on the tape machine, and there’s the Beatles. It sounds like a bunch of 20-year-olds in a room, because that’s what it is. I don’t think that changes. A bunch of 20-year-olds in a room will always be a bunch of 20-year-olds in a room. Despite me doing a lot of work, I’m trying to have it sound as visceral as possible. So there’s a few layers between you listening and the record itself. It’s like technology is dust, and I’m sort of blowing the dust off.

At a recent playback event in New York, you demonstrated the “de-mixing” technique by making everything on “Taxman” disappear until all we were hearing was Ringo’s snare drum. That’s some astounding technology, but what is the practical application of it?

There’s a bunch of things that have to line up for us to do this. One is that the technology has to be in place so we can work on it. And then the other is, is there enough extra [unreleased music] to tell a story of the making of the album? It’s a multitiered project. I always like the feeling of there being a curated nature, that these are the sketches of the album that came to be. People look for the magic: the magic of George Martin, the magic of [Beatles engineer] Geoff Emerick, the magic of Abbey Road [Studios]. Is it because Paul played a Rickenbacker bass? No, the magic is the fact that these people in a room made the most extraordinary sound. Someone said to me today that Revolver sounds like it was mastered a month ago. And I said, “Well, actually, it was.” A lot of people that come to these [listening sessions] already know the records inside out. But there are a lot of people that have never heard the album.

Which early takes or rehearsals were the biggest surprises to you when you first listened to everything that was available?

I suppose, because of the personal connection, the “Eleanor Rigby” piece. It’s fascinating to me just because it’s nice to hear my dad at work. Paul always said, about my dad, that he had a great bedside manner.

Giles Martin – From TIDAL Magazine, October 21, 2022

The thing I still get from Paul and Ringo is that sense of camaraderie and the realisation that it was the best band they were ever in. I saw that, working with Paul on this, how much he appreciates the other members of the band.
